Can you do pharmacy school online?

Not entirely — labs and rotations must be in person. Here is what genuinely can be studied online, how hybrid pathways work, and which routes are safe to trust.

The short answer

A fully online pharmacy degree does not exist in accredited form, because laboratory work and supervised clinical rotations are required for licensure. What does exist are hybrid pathways with online lectures plus in-person labs and placements, online prerequisite courses, and largely online pharmacy technician programmes. Everything you revise — drug classes, mechanisms, calculations — can be studied online.

What can and cannot be online

  • Yes — lectures and theoryRecorded pharmacology, pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry and therapeutics content is routinely delivered online, even by campus-based programmes.
  • Yes — question banks and revisionExam-style MCQs, flashcards and spaced repetition work entirely on a phone and are how most students actually revise.
  • Often — prerequisite lecturesMany schools accept online general education and some science lecture courses, but usually require in-person laboratory components.
  • No — laboratoriesCompounding, sterile technique and analytical labs must be done in person under supervision.
  • No — clinical rotationsSupervised practice with real patients is a licensing requirement and cannot be simulated online.
  • No — a full accredited PharmDThere is no fully online accredited PharmD. Treat any advert for one as a warning sign.

Hybrid and distance pathways

  • How hybrid programmes are structuredDidactic teaching is delivered online, with scheduled on-campus intensives for laboratory blocks and practical assessments, and rotations arranged near where you live.
  • Who they suitStudents who cannot relocate — those with dependants, existing jobs or geographic constraints — and who can still travel for the required in-person blocks.
  • What to verify before applyingAccreditation status with your national body, how many on-campus days per term are required, whether the school places you on rotation or you must find sites, and whether graduates are eligible for licensure where you intend to practise.

Online technician routes

  • Pharmacy technician certificates

Largely online coursework with a supervised practical or externship element. Months rather than years, and a legitimate way into pharmacy work.

  • Why it helps future applicants

It pays while you finish prerequisites and gives you the pharmacy experience that PharmD admissions committees weight heavily.

  • Check recognition first

Confirm the programme is recognised by the certifying body in your country before enrolling; unrecognised certificates do not count towards registration.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do pharmacy school entirely online?
No. Fully online PharmD degrees are not accredited, because laboratory work and supervised clinical rotations must be completed in person. Any programme advertising a complete online pharmacy degree with no in-person component should be checked against your national accreditor before you pay anything.
What parts of pharmacy study can be online?
Didactic lectures, recorded pharmacology and therapeutics content, question banks, flashcards and many prerequisite science courses can be studied online. Compounding labs, sterile technique, patient counselling assessments and rotations cannot.
How do hybrid or distance pharmacy programmes work?
Hybrid pathways deliver lectures online and require students to attend campus for laboratory blocks and assessments, then place them with local pharmacies or hospitals for rotations. They suit students who cannot relocate full-time but still involve regular travel.
Can prerequisites be completed online?
Often yes, but check each school's policy. Many accept online general education and some science lecture courses while still requiring in-person laboratory components for chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology.
Is an online pharmacy technician course legitimate?
Many technician certificate programmes are largely online with a supervised practical or externship component, and they can be a legitimate low-cost entry into pharmacy. Confirm the programme is recognised by the certifying body in your country before enrolling.
